Title
Album of twelve hand-colored plates of genre scenes.
Published
n.d., circa 1860's.
Description
Contemporary blue satin cloth binding with elaborate gilt to boards; minor shelf wear to edges only. 12 oblong hand-coloured plates of genre scenes, mostly involving children. While there is no title, this is almost certainly of German origin, with captions for each plate in German, English and French, and this book was probably assembled by a tourist who chose the images at a print or souvenir shop where they were then bound for him. The images, measuring 8" x 6.25" each, depict boys playing marbles (After School), a small boy riding a dog (The Little Rider), children under a makeshift tent (School in the Open Air), young women playing with a single man (The Play in the Garden), feeding of chicken and geese (the Feeding), Blind Man's Bluff, The Welcome Visitors, the Return from the Field, The Poor Blind, The Dinner at Harvest Time, The Fruit Harvest, The Excursion to the Country. Some marginal soiling. Images mostly clean and fresh. Binding tight. MS inscription to front free endpaper: "Florence Kitham from her dear Mother November 19, 1865".
