(No place, ca. 1720)
Description
Folio (395 x 270 mm). Contemporary calf, inner dentelles, spine richly gilt. Spine and boards rubbed and worn, corners bumped. Album assembled in the early 18th century, containing about 120 cut-out and mounted text engravings and figures from engraved plates, including 65 contemporary coloured figures on 36 separate leaves from N. de Nicolay's "Navigations et peregrinations orientales" published in 1591 and considered "the first work to represent the costume of the Near East in detail" (Mortimer). "C'est la premiere serie de documents serieux sur les habillements du proche Orient" (Colas). Other images depict several Arabian merchants and chieftains (including Kings, 16th century women in local costume, soldiers and warriors on horseback, as well as 3 washed ink drawings of 18th century European nobles). An early and most charming album of oriental costumes. Some browning and spotting and a few marginal tears to the backing leaves on which the plates are mounted. Plate titles in manuscript.
