Description
FIRST EDITION OF THIS MAGNIFICENT WORK ON THE FLORA OF THE EAST INDIES, BASED PRIMARILY
ON THE AUTHOR'S PLANT-HUNTING IN JAVA.
Four volumes bound in 3, folio. Half-titles, 3 lithographed portrait frontispieces (2 on india paper and mounted), 210 fine lithographed plates after Arckenhausen, Berghaus, Bick, Blume, Decaisne, Gordon, Latour, Lauters and Payen including 20 views (some on india paper and mounted), the rest botanical of which most are hand-coloured or partly so and 19 are large and folding, text and some uncoloured plates foxed but otherwise mostly to guards with hand-coloured plates generally clean and bright, contemporary half red morocco, spines gilt in compartments with green and tan roan labels, lightly rubbed. Karl Ludwig Blume (1796-1862) was a German botanist who spent most of his working life in the Netherlands, where he was director of the Rijksherbarium. He originally trained as a doctor and his inquiries into native medicines led him to Java in 1817, where he began to study botany. He became director of the Buitenzorg Botanic Garden before returning to Europe. The present work is supplementary to Blume's Flora Javae. The title refers to Georg Eberhard Rumpf; Blume saw himself as continuing Rumpf's pioneering work and indeed was acknowledged as his spiritual disciple with the cognomen "Rumphius".
