Full red morocco with two gilt decorated borders on sides, green morocco lozenge-shaped title label to upper cover, spine re-backed with green morocco title label, fresh cloth hinges, marbled endpapers. Engraved title page (not lithographed as Landwehr states) by J.C. Zürcher and 45 aquatint plates (ca. 195 x 225 mm), finely coloured by a contemporary hand (as issued), numbered 1-40 only, each with the address of 'Buffa et Fils Kalverstraat no. 221' and the first forty with the caption 'Vue d'Amsterdam,' the last five depicting estates and palaces in Haarlem (Pavillon), Soestdijk, The Hague (Huis ten Bosch), Apeldoorn (Het Loo), and Leersum (Broekhuisen) by A Lutz (29) and W.H. Hoogkamer (16), after the drawings by Cornelis de Kruyf (36), A. Toselli (1), J. Jelgershuis (2) De Fonteneau (1), H.C. ten Cate (3) and H. Greeven (2). One leaf with the list of plates in Dutch and French. A rare series of beautiful and attractive views of Amsterdam and its surroundings. The book is the first of Buffa's Amsterdam color plate books and was published in installments. The plates are carefully mounted on larger leaves and set off with a thick black border; the captions are in Dutch and French. The series provides a magnificent image of Amsterdam at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Included are views of the Royal Palace (also a plate of the interior), Kalverstraat, Heerengracht, Amstel, the city gates, Felix Meritis, the Old and New Churches, the Royal Museum (Trippenhuis), markets, Post office, theatres, exchange, parks, etc. Outside Amsterdam, there are views of the House Zwanenburg at Half-weg, the 'Pavillon' at Haarlem, the Royal palaces at Soestdijk, The Hague and Apeldoorn (Het Loo), and the 'Riderhofstad' (manor house) Broekhuisen at Leersum in the province of Utrecht.
