Quarto; 37 hand-coloured lithographed plates, bound in black pebbled leather with elaborate gilt to boards and spine compartments. All edges gilt, with gilt inner dentelles and marbled endpapers. Herdman was a member of the Liverpool Academy of the London Artists' Fund Society and the London Institute of Fine Arts. He also produced a folio of Continental Sketches, Liverpool, 1843. The introduction to this edition is by Sir Joseph Picton, a philanthropist with a keen interest in the architecture of Liverpool, who gave his name to the Reading Room and, in fact, the Library in St. George's Square.
